Are You Prepared for an Emergency?

Prince George’s County has shared important information on how to prepare for an emergency, and it's crucial that your family is ready for any unexpected situation. One of the first steps is to ensure that you have an emergency preparedness plan in place and that all family members are aware of it.

Here’s a list of essential items your family should have to stay safe during an emergency:

  1. Food and Water: Ensure you have a 3-day supply of food and water. Don’t forget a manual can opener and serve ware to make meal preparation easier.

  2. Medicine: Keep a 3-day supply of any necessary medications. This ensures that you have what you need if access to medical facilities is limited.

  3. Medical Supplies: If you need hearing aids or other critical medical supplies, make sure you have them ready.

  4. Personal Care Items: Items such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, wipes, and contact lenses or glasses are important for hygiene and comfort.

  5. Safety Supplies: Prepare a first aid kit, an emergency blanket, and a multipurpose tool (which can serve as a knife, file, pliers, screwdriver, and whistle).

  6. Electronics: Ensure you have a flashlight, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, a cell phone with chargers, and extra batteries. These items can help you stay informed and connected during an emergency.

  7. Important Documents: Keep your insurance cards, immunization records, paperwork on ongoing health issues, extra cash, maps of your area, and an extra set of car or house keys.

  8. For Children: Be sure to have baby bottles, formula, baby food, diapers, and games or activities to keep children entertained and comfortable.

  9. For Pets: Your pets also need care during an emergency. Have a 3-day supply of food and water, bowls, a litter box, grooming items, bleach, pet toys, and their bed. A sturdy leash/harness and pet carrier will be helpful for transport. Don’t forget to keep current photos of your pet, a description of their feeding schedule, medical conditions, and your veterinarian’s contact information.

  10. Shut-off Locations: Know where your gas, electric, and water shut-off valves are located and learn how to turn them off if necessary.

By preparing these essential items and knowing your emergency plan, your family will be better equipped to handle any situation that arises.
